St Edmundsbury Borough Council
have recently published a planning document called ‘The Local Development
Framework’.
This document sets out the council’s plans
for the future of the region up to 2031.
The document includes detailed information
about new housing and business developments as well plans for roads and
other major facilities.
Detailed maps are supplied along with policy
statements covering the borough’s plans for the next 25 years.
It is now the turn of the people of Clare
to voice their opinion on the potentially far-reaching plans described
in this document.
The framework has been produced to meet the Government's Regional Spatial
Strategy for the East of England, which has earmarked a further 8,150 homes
to be built in the borough by 2031. After an initial round of consultation
earlier this year, St Edmundsbury has produced a number of preferred options
for people to comment on.
At this stage the plans are only proposals
and a period of consultation is underway. The council would like to hear
from local people on their views about the options suggested.
Any large developments would be built in
phases and include employment units and community and social facilities,
such as primary schools and shops, to be factored in and all developments
in rural areas of five or more properties must have a 40 per cent allocation
of low-cost housing, the same rule applying to urban developments of
15 houses or more.
Whatever developments may be selected, the council is bound by policy to
prevent large towns merging with rural developments.
A second consultation document, called Site Allocations Issues and Options,
also asks people to look at individual sites that landowners and developers
have put forward for consideration for development, ranging from one house
in someone's garden to a large housing estate.

Options and Site Allocations Issues and Options
Documents will end on 5 January 2009. The council offices will be closed
for Christmas from 25 December to 2 January 2009 inclusive.
These areas have been proposed
by the Borough Council as
potential options for future development.
It is now up to the
people of Clare to give their views on the
options shown.
Clare is just one of the areas covered in
the Framework Document
with other areas such as Hundon and Haverhill
also considered.
