If you are a follower of
the TV series
Strictly Come Dancing then you will
enjoy comparing not just the
dancers but also the elegant clothes
they wear. Ballroom dancing has
always been associated with grace
and style and never more so than in
the 1940’s with film stars like Fred
Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
Dance fans will be pleased to know that there is a dancing connection between Fred Astaire and South West Suffolk. Fred had an elder sister called Edel, who was also a fine dancer. The two of them started their
careers dancing together in vaudeville from a very young age. All that changed when Fred was talent spotted and lured to Hollywood. His sister decided to retire and settle down and start a family.
She married a well know socialite of the time Lord Charles Cavendish. Lord Charles was the son of Lord Victor Cavendish 9th Earl of Devonshire. The Cavendish family is one of the oldest and most influential in England and they gain their name from Cavendish in Suffolk the village only some 10 miles from Haverhill.
The Cavendish family have in more recent times lived in Chatsworth House but they still retain their connections with the village of Cavendish their ancestral home.
If the next decade turns out to be a new age of style and grace it is satisfying to know that one of the greatest and most stylish men of his age would have known this region well and would no doubt encourage us all to ‘Keep dancing’.
