Following long awaited government
final approval the UK is to get the world’s first indoor winter sports resort.
Work on the centre, just outside Ipswich
can now commence. The 350 acre, £350 million project is a privately
funded development by Onslow Suffolk. As well as housing Europe’s largest
indoor ski slope SnOasis has been specifically designed to become the country’s
first centre of excellence for winter sports athletes.
Fourteen different sports disciplines
will be brought together and provided with training facilities to match,
if not surpass, the best in the world. Also, as a truly unique all-encompassing
tourist destination offering an extensive array of sports, leisure and entertainment
activities, visitor numbers are projected to be in the region of 650,000
per year. This figure will include: day visitors, short stay holidaymakers,
conference delegates and athletes using the Sports Academy.
During the construction phase, which will
take 30 months, it is expected that 3,500 jobs will be created. When complete,
a further 1,800 full-time equivalent jobs will be provided. These new
employment opportunities will stimulate the local economy through spending
in shops, increased demand for accommodation and the sourcing of supplies
from businesses within the region. Nationally, the full impact of the economic
benefits on the construction, manufacturing, tourist and winter sports industries
will only be truly understood once the project is underway.
Borough Council leader Liz Harsant welcomed
the green light for SnOasis. She said: "This
is a big boost for the local and regional economy and I welcome the fact
that many hundreds of jobs will be created. “The news will also be
welcome for local companies and for tourism.”
However Lib Dem county councillor for Gipping Valley, John Field, flagged
up some concerns over potential damage to wildlife and an increase in traffic
on roads in the area. "Now that this
decision has been taken by the Government, we must look to the future and
ensure that the local people get the best possible outcome from this development,”
he said.
When finished this exciting
new project will be good news for local residents who will now be able to
make the short trip to Ipswich to find snowy slopes instead of the long
haul to expensive European resorts.

Enterprise
Week
Enterprise Week began on Monday 17 November
2008 and for the first time ever, went global. As part of the first ever
Global Entrepreneurship Week, more than 77 countries ran events and activities
inspiring people to unleash their enterprising ideas to address some of
society’s biggest problems.
In celebration of this event, Samuel Ward
Arts and Technology College ran several events.
Teams from several year groups took part
in the National Make Your Mark Challenge on Monday 17 November. They received
their business challenge on Monday at 9.00 am and spent the day working
on their ideas. The best two ideas were selected and then submitted to the
national competition. A team of four year 10 students reached the Regional
Finals which take place on Friday 28 November at Ipswich Town Football Club.
On Tuesday 18 November, all year 9 students
spent the day taking part in a Dragons Den style activity which saw 22 groups
presenting a ‘pitch’ to a panel of ‘dragons’.
The winning team’s idea was for a combination
toothbrush / toothpaste / mouthwash. Year 12 students took part in a week-long
timetable of workshops and work shadowing which culminated in team presentations
to a panel of employers. The theme for the week is ‘management’ and all
activities for this week are enhanced by the involvement of managers from
local businesses and organisations who spend the week interacting with the
students and sharing some of their valuable experiences.
A team from each of years 10 and 11 took
part in an ‘Ethical Dragons Den’ competition at Castle Manor School. They
competed against 3 other schools and the year 10 team won the shield for
the best business idea and presentation.
Howard Lay, Headteacher said “This was a
fantastic week of enterprise activities which showed
students another side to life out of school. They all learned such a lot
about working together and what challenges and rewards they can expect in
the future”.
