THE HORRORS

Coffin Joe (Spurgeon) from Clare in West Suffolk is one of the members of a new Anglian band making a reputation for itself in the clubs and halls of the UK and America.
The band is called THE HORRORS and features five former art school students. Their musical style is raw and uncompromising and sounds like a fusion between The Stranglers and The Prodigy. Their on-stage energy is earning them a growing number of fans and their recent TV appearance and musical set at the BBC’s electric proms has brought them to the notice of new music fans on both sides of the Atlantic. This is a band on the move.

One of the founder members of the band is Joseph Spurgeon (Coffin Joe) who is a local boy from Clare. Joe was born in Southend but moved to Clare with his family and lived in the town for many years. He also went to the local school at Stoke College.
Both Joe and his sister were raised in an environment of music as Joe’s father, Paul is a talented saxophone player. Paul is also a founder member of the Clare World Music Festival and from an early age Joe was exposed to many different musical styles. He experimented with different instruments but was converted to the drums after being taught by former Shakatack drummer  Roger Odell who lives in Yeldham and is also the founder of the live jazz nights at The Bell Hotel in Clare
Joe’s interest in music also extended to art and fashion and after school he went on to study Art and Design at college
While at college his interest for new music was shared by his many friends and soon he was keen to play in a band of his own.
The Horrors was formed in 2005 by former art school students like Joe and now it has become an established group with a great future.

BAND HISTORY

The Band started in 2005 with local sets at pubs and clubs in East Anglia and also around Southend.
Their reputation for raw talent and a high energy performance spread quickly and soon they were performing at larger venues in Cambridge and Bury.
From the beginning, the band have insisted on retaining their own style and only perform their own material, steadfastly refusing to do covers of other people’s material. This means their on-stage set is short, only 20 minutes but what they lack in time they make up for in energy as a packed performance at Cambridge’s Junction recently showed.

Now into 2006 the last few months have been hard been hard work for the band as their popularity has grown and they have become more in demand.
Following their sell out performance at The Junction in Cambridge they went on to be featured in the New Musical Express (NME) and have received rave reviews from critics across the music scene.

Regional success soon translated into National acclaim as they were invited to take part in the  BBC’s electric Proms night where they found themselves in the company of many famous names much to the amazement of lead singer Faris Badwan who still can’t believe he is now rubbing shoulders with the likes of Coldplay and The White stripes.
From their success at the BBC they have been booked on a tour in America and have been touring in New York and Los Angeles. Unfortunately the band’s popularity has had its down side as at a recent gig one fan tried to grab the microphone and a fight was started, bringing their set to a sudden close.

The band have just released their new 7in Vinyl Single called ‘Count in Fives which also includes two other songs, ‘A Knife in the eye’ and ‘Who says’. For more information please goto the website: www.thehorrors.co.uk

THE INTERVIEW

How did you meet?
We met in clubs and music venues.
We just started talking and soon found we all liked to visit the same places and listen to the same music.
It was a natural progression to form a band together. That was early 2005 and we have been together ever since.

What are your Influences?
We don’t have any lasting influences we like all kinds of music. We are more interested in what we will be doing next week than copying people from the past. Musically we like
everything but some bands we think are special are:

SHEENA, MR HYDE, JACK THE RIPPER, BORIS THE SPIDER,
RASPUTIN THE MAD MONK, JOE MEEK, THE SCARLET
PIMPERNEL, DORIAN GRAY, SHOCK HEADED PETER, SISTER RAY, POISON IVY, DEAD JOE AND EDWARD GOREY

What do you bring to Rock & Roll?
We think we are unique. There are too many bands at the moment who all sound the same. There is not much originality. We bring something different to the
music scene.
